Frequently Asked Questions
How fast is it?
Unlike many ISPs, Swift Wireless does not limit download speeds for casual internet "surfing", except during periods of peak demand. This means that you get the maximum amount of bandwidth available on our network at any given time. Usually that means speeds up to or over 1 Mbps. During extended downloads your speed may be limited to the rated speed of your service plan-- usually 512 kbps-- unless you have purchased a higher-speed plan from us. Since Swift Wireless is unable to control data rates outside our own network, actual speeds may be lower at times due to hardware or network constraints of the server or network you are connected to. During peak periods it is also possible that congestion of major Internet backbones will cause lower speeds.
Do I need equipment?
Swift Wireless will loan you the necessary equipment to connect your computer to our network free of charge. This will include a mast up to five feet tall, if one is required. This equipment must be returned to Swift Wireless if you discontinue your service. Taller masts or special high-gain antennas, if needed, may be purchased at additional cost. Indoor wireless equipment and/or routers for connecting multiple computers, when requested, are also available from Swift Wireless at additional cost. A Swift Wireless representative will be pleased to help you select equipment and will quote you prices prior to installation.
What about Installation?
Installation is normally a one-time fee of $80 for residential customers and $100 for business customers (up to four computers). Business installation rates include configuration of network settings on individual computers but do not include any internal network wiring.
E-mail accounts.
Swift Wireless customers may receive up to five e-mail accounts at no additional charge. If you are changing service from another ISP, your e-mail address may have to change, unless you are using web-based services such as Hotmail, MSN or Yahoo. You may not run your own mail server on our network unless special arrangements have been made in advance, and transmission of spam from our network is strictly prohibited.
